Fewer systems in a house are more overlooked than the sewage system. It’s underground, quietly going about its work and needs little maintenance. However, when signs of failure occur, it’s important to take action. Early diagnosis and repair could save you thousands in the long run if problems get worse.
Some signs you may need a septic tank replacement are;
- Bad Odours: Bad smells from around the septic tank, drainage field, or inside the home can be the first problem presented. These odours are normally caused by gases from trapped or untreated wastewater.
- Sewage Backups: This is a much more serious sign. If sewage is backing up into sinks, baths, or toilets, the tank could be full, or there could be a blockage or failure.
- Standing Water or Wet Spots: If there are wet, mushy or puddly areas near the drainage field, it is more than likely a sign of septic overflow or a failure of the drainage field, which could mean the tank isn’t properly handling the wastewater.
- Slow Drains: If sinks, showers, or toilets are draining slowly, it may mean the septic tank is full or the system is clogged.
- Frequent Emptying: If the septic tank requires emptying more often than your normal maintenance schedule, it may indicate a problem with the tank or drain field which could require additional septic tank maintenance.
Many of these issues have environmental and health risks associated with them and require urgent resolution. If your tank has any of these issues then you may need additional septic tank maintenance or a full septic tank replacement.

Why septic tanks fail
Throughout the years, we have come across and replaced many different types of septic tanks in our line of work; from block and brick constructions with soakaways to newer glass-reinforced plastic tanks. Each goes wrong in their own way, but normally problems can appear as a result of the following:
- Poorly constructed drain fields or soakaways constructed in ground that is susceptible to flooding, or has poor or unsuitable soil makeup, can cause an inability for the digestion processes to take place correctly and can result in system or soakaway failure.
- Infrequent maintenance, which allows the tank to become full of sludge, clogging up the soakaway and permanently damaging it.
- Some older systems which have been in place 50+ years are no longer structurally sound and are either at risk of structural failure or excessive groundwater ingress.
Septic tank systems can also be damaged by disposing items which don’t break down. For example, the following items should never be put into the tank:
- Antibacterial cleaning products and sterilising fluids (baby food utensils) which kill the bacteria inside the tank
- Sanitary towels, baby wipes and disposable nappies
- Cooking oils and fats which solidify and block the whole system — not just the tank.
